| TOP 20 TOOLS MOTOR 2008 |
| MOTOR’s annual Top 20 Tools competition is now in its 17th year. As in years past, we were impressed by the quality and ingenuity of the entries we received. We offer our sincere thanks to all companies that submitted candidates for consideration, and special congratulations to each of this year’s winners. Without further ado, we proudly present the entries that captured the gold in 2008. CRecorder by Launch Tech USA OBD II data recorders are typically at either end of the spectrum—very inexpensive ones that simply record short periods of data and log trouble codes, and high-end data loggers that can record enhanced data and even trigger on specific codes for factory scan tools. The CRecorder fills the intermediate area for shops using generic OBD II data, and can continuously record up to 24 hours of engine data, so the customer trying to duplicate a problem for the shop has some flexibility. Using software downloaded from the manufacturer’s special website, the technician can set the starting time into the recorder immediately before installation and, when the car returns, download the information via a USB connection into the shop PC, then close in on a problem that occurred at a specific time. The data for each PID can be displayed in list or graph form. Clicking on points on the graph also brings up the exact data readings. Because it works as a real-time data logger, the CRecorder also can be used in the shop or on road tests for diagnosis. real-time data logger, the CRecorder also can be used in the shop or on road tests for diagnosis. -By THE EDITORS OF MOTOR |
